Today I attended opening day at Citi Field to watch the beloved New York Mets. The Mets have the best record on opening day in history and continued in fashion today with a win 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Here are some quick notes from the game, most of which do not have to do with the actual game at all.
1. The Mets Give Us Blue Walls…THATS WALLS WITH A W
Well it was about time the franchise listened to the fans. Since the creation of Citi Field fans have been shouting about making the stadium more like Shea. Well the blue wall was a perfect change and actually makes the outfield pop out a little more. The walls have been moved in, creating the party city area behind the left field wall and it looks like there will be a few more balls landing in that area than last year.
2. NO BIG FLAG!!!
Opening day in Major League Baseball is unofficial national big flag day. Stadiums across the country cover their outfields or walls with the biggest American flags they can find. TODAY THE METS DID NOT HAVE A BIG AMERICAN FLAG. Now I do not know the reason why but I will just chalk it up as a budget cut from the Wilpons.
3. Andres Torres To The DL
No Comment.
4. Garry Carter
The Mets did a great job remembering Gary Carter today. Revealing a logo in left center field and having his family throw out the first pitch along with a moment of silence to start the game really paid tribute to the great Mets catcher.
5. Opening Day Line Up Call
Ralph Kiner came to the mic and announced the line up for opening day and he owned it. Shaky at best inside the booth when he comes to visit throughout the season but today he started off with a joke and just did what he used to do best.
6. MISC SIDENOTES
NOT ONE VENDER came into section 403 today, The sausage stand ran out of sausages by the 5th inning and they have to make a rule to the amount of times your allowed to get up out of your seat during a game.
Overall it was a great day, Mets win, Johan did what Johan does, DWright had the only RBI and I got a sandwich from Momas of Corona, the best in town.
