Between The Beers

Above Average Thoughts From An Average Guy

NFL Playoff Picks – Week 1

So it begins….. The Playoffs.  After a pretty intense regular season, 8 teams will fight today and tomorrow to advance to round 2.  All teams, regardless of how they got in or how I feel about them, deserve to be here.  This is how I see round one playing out:

Bengals +4 @ Texans:  I just don’t believe in the Texans.  If Schaub was playing QB, Texans would be favored by 10.  Texans have a great defense, great running game, and a great wide receiver, but have TJ Yates at QB. Even though the Bengals don’t really impress me either, I will take Andy Dalton over TJ Yates.  Both are rookies but Yates has less experience, only playing in a handful of game.  Dalton has played against a tougher schedule and has played the whole season.  I actually think the Bengals will win this outright in a low scoring, boring game .  Bengals 20-13.

Saints -10 over Lions & over 58:  A few reasons here why the Saints are going to smoke the Lions.  Drew Brees, is the first reason.  If it wasn’t for Aaron Rodgers being ridiculous, Brees would be MVP.  He had an off day last game against the Lions and put up 31 points, in a 14 point win for the Saints.  Saints are at home where they not only don’t lose, they average around 42 points a game.   Lions are coming off a really bad game defensively against Matt Flynn and the Packers.  Flynn starting his first game of the year, scored at will and racked up the yards.  Lions will score against the Saints, just not more than the Saints.  Stafford will hold his own for a while but Brees will come out victorious.  Coming off an embarrassing loss in last years playoffs to Seattle, Saints will be ready for this one.  Saints 45-31.

Giants -3 over Falcons & over 47:  As a Jet fan, it kills me to say this.  I would be scared of the Giants.  For some reason, this Giants team reminds me a little of the team that won the Superbowl.  They have the offensive weapons, Manning, Bradshaw, Jacobs, Nicks & Cruz and can score on anybody.  If Manning gets hot, the NFC is in trouble.  They have a sick defensive line that gets to the QB at will.  Falcons have the offensive weapons to score and give the Giants D some trouble.  Both teams will score and  I think this game stays close for a while, but I think the Giants prevail on their home field.  Giants 34-27.

Denver +9 over Pittsburgh:  I’m not really sure how  I feel about this game.  I mean I can’t see the Steelers and Roethlisberger losing in the first round to a team as bad as the Broncos.  But for some reason, I see this game being close with the Broncos having a chance to win in the 4th quarter.  The Steelers will be without the their running back Rashard Mendenhall and Roethlisberger has been fighting a high ankle sprain, so the Pittsburgh offense might not be that effective.  Broncos defense is pretty good and will keep the Steelers out of the end zone.  Steelers defense should hold Tebow and the Broncos offense in check.  If the Broncos can keep the crowd into it and don’t turn the ball over, they will have a shot.  You can’t count out Jesus (Tebow) right?  Steelers 17-13.

Good luck.  I smell a solid 6-0 weekend
